My Lord,
We have the honour to request that your Lordship will be pleased to favourably consider the application we now make that the Government of Hong Kong be instructed to grant our Firm there, Butterfield & Swire, the same term, namely 999 years, for the Crown Leases of Shaukiwan Marine Lots 2 to 10 and Shaukiwan Inland Lot 408 as has already been granted them for the extension to Quarry Bay Marine Lot 2, Quarry Bay Marine Lot 3, and Quarry Bay Inland Lot 6. Quarry Bay Marine Lot 2 was bought by us, and Crown Lease issued for 999 years, in 1891.
1. We attach a small plan which shows at a glance the relationship of each of the Lots acquired by us in connection with the extensive Dockyard Works begun eight years ago and now approaching completion.
2. The Leases for all those Lots coloured blue will be for 999 years.
3. But for Shaukiwan Marine Lots 2 to 10 and for Shaukiwan Inland Lot 408, coloured yellow, the Hong Kong Authorities have intimated that the term cannot be extended beyond 75 years, with an option for a further 75 years.
4. We contend that the Shaukiwan Lots referred to, although separated from the major portion of the Property by
The Right Honourable
The Earl of Crewe, K.G.
Secretary of State for the Colonies.
